Power Up With YOUth San Diego:
Imagine Lead Change Thrive
Meaningful Work Collaboration and Fun
Our Story
“Power Up was founded on the belief that every young person, regardless of their background, has the potential to lead. Born from a desire to bridge the gap in opportunities for underserved youth, our program fosters the growth of leadership skills, community advocacy, and social change. Through mentorship, training, and hands-on involvement in civic engagement, we empower young people to become advocates for their communities and active participants in building a more just, inclusive and equitable world.”
Our Inspiration:
In March 2024, four friends traveled from San Diego to Selma to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the George Pettis Bridge crossing, a key moment in the fight for voting rights. We were inspired by the young leaders we met in Selma who were imagining new possibilities, leading their communities to thrive, and creating lasting change.
We returned to San Diego determined to engage our young leaders. We believe our youth, regardless of their background, have the potential, the passion, the creativity, and the drive to address the long existing and increasingly urgent need to lift the vote in their own community - San Diego City and County’s District 4.
Our Intention: Lead Connect Collaborate Impact
With the intent to provide an educationally enriched and supportive environment for young people to lead, connect, collaborate and make a significant impact on voting in our community, we collaborated with eight San Diego Unified District E schools and formed Power uP With YOUth.
Power uP With YOUth is named and led by youth, ages 10-17. Youth chose the video game term “Power uP” to reflect their intention to “boost their ability to play and win tough challenges”. And increasing voter turnout is certainly a challenge!
Power uP With YOUth– uP The Turnout was our first campaign. It’s intent was to increase voter turnout by engaging these youth to encourage their peers, friends, and families to vote. We made history! 120 students engaged over 1,200 voters to participate in the 2024 election.
Our Challenge.
visual: a mountain
District 4 is at the heart of our efforts. It is diverse and culturally rich yet unaffordable for most of its residents and underserved by its government. This situation is due in large part because the residents don’t make their voices heard. Despite this obvious and urgent need for change, three of four registered voters don’t vote, leaving crucial life affecting decisions to others. Power uP aims to reverse this persistent statistic.
During the campaign we also saw a disturbing gap: while many were registered to vote, far too few were engaged in advocating for their community. Many said they felt felt disconnected, thinking their voices didn’t matter or that the process was too complicated and change was too slow. This disconnect is devastating with far reaching consequences. It leaves vital issues, like homelessness and community development and prosperity overlooked, delayed and ultimately denied. Power uP aims to reverse this persistent disconnect.
Our Power uP.
Power uP youth wanted to expand their work by engaging in community advocacy. We heard them and we broadened our efforts to include civic participation opportunities for them.
Through education, research, mentorship, training, and hands-on involvement, we prepare to youth lead, advocate and actively contribute to building a more inclusive, equitable community and world.
We aim to boost their ability to collaborate, hold each other, their suporters, officials and community organizations accountable and drive change - all while having fun.
